101 Ways

Maintaining a good fitness level can be quite daunting for many reasons – no time, no energy, no resources (money, place) or no motivation. However, if you follow these simple steps, you will not just find a way to stay fit in your busy routine; you will actually enjoy doing it. And most of all, higher energy levels will make you more productive and help you enjoy your life to the full. So, let’s get started, shall we?

1. It’s no big deal

The biggest hurdle most of us face is getting started. The exercise regime looks very daunting. We are worried that we may not have the physical stamina to work-out, or the motivation to follow the routine regularly. Committing an hour every day seems like a major task because there is no immediate gratification. Fitness benefits are not visible immediately.

Here’s one tip that will change all of that – start small. Commit to a workout of 10-minutes a day, twice a week. Nothing more! It’s not the quantity, but the consistency that matters (I’ll explain this later). A smaller goal will make your regime look less scary. It will help you get out of your comfort zone, and make a start. A good start is job half-done. To begin, just set a very low benchmark. Time dust off those running shoes, and step out.

2. Give yourself a pat on the back

Most of the times, we are so harsh on ourselves, that we forget to celebrate our achievements. In fact, we don’t even recognize them. If you always wanted to start those morning walks, but never managed to get yourself out of the bed on time, here’s your chance. The day you do your first walk on the beach, treat yourself. Buy yourself a cup of coffee, or buy that music CD that you have been postponing all these days.

3. Stay consistent

Have you observed ants working? They are only able to lift one tiny grain of sugar at a time. But they keep at it trip after trip, and before you know, they have a pile of sugar stored. Start small, but stay consistent. If you have promised yourself to go for a walk for 10 minutes, twice a week, do it regularly. Do it on the same days of the week, same time of the day if possible. This helps you form a habit. It also helps to manage other commitments. If it is raining, wear a raincoat and a good hat. But do get out. This last bit is absolutely important. Remember – you are bigger than your excuses.

4. Listen to your body

Now you are probably wondering – what form of exercise should I do? There are so many options available – aerobics, running, walking, weight-training, swimming, yoga, and diet. Which one of these will give you the maximum benefit? This is by far the most important tip you will ever read – do what feels right for you. Listen to your body. It’s not the form of activity that matters, it is being active that makes the difference. If you enjoy music and dancing, then play your favorite album, and start rocking. If you enjoy the nature, go for a bush walk. If you enjoy rugby, play the game.

5. Follow a holistic approach

Last but not the least, staying fit is not just about the body, but also about your mind and soul. A healthy mind is found in a healthy body. Here’s good news – the exercise of mind is much easier than the exercise of the body. There are three time-tested techniques – meditation, positive attitude, and laughter. If you are doing physical activities twice a week, then you can practice meditation on two other days of the week. Laugh and smile as often as you can. Keep looking for every excuse to laugh. Laugh loudly, using your stomach muscles. You cannot be stressed and laugh at the same time. When you laugh, your body de-stresses and your mind follows suit. And finally, maintain a positive attitude. Always look at the brighter side of life.
